How tight should a wedding vest fit?
A wedding vest is intended to act like a "corset" for the torso. It should fit snugly against the body to create a slimming effect, suppressing the shirt fabric underneath. It should be tight enough that you feel "held in" and your posture is supported, but not so tight that the buttons pull (creating an "X" crease) or the fabric gapes when you breathe. Ideally, use the adjustable cinch at the back to fine-tune the fit throughout the day.
My vest feels too short; can I see my shirt at the waist?
No. In bespoke tailoring, the "Shirt Triangle" (a visible triangle of white shirt between the vest bottom and trouser waist) is a major fit failure. The vest must be long enough to cover the trouser waistband completely. This often requires wearing trousers at the natural waist (near the navel) rather than the hips. If you have a long torso or wear low-rise pants, you must request a longer vest cut.
What is the difference between Bespoke and Made-to-Measure (MTM)?
MTM adapts a standard pattern block to your primary measurements (chest, waist). Bespoke involves creating a completely new pattern from scratch, accounting for complex nuances like shoulder slope, posture (erect vs. stooped), and body asymmetry. For most grooms, a high-quality MTM process that includes a posture assessment provides a "second skin" fit without the 8-12 week timeline and higher cost of full bespoke.
How can the Groom stand out from the Groomsmen?
We recommend the "Hero Vest" strategy. While groomsmen wear vests that match their suits (e.g., all Navy), the Groom can wear a contrasting vest to establish visual hierarchy.
- Fabric/Texture: Velvet or Silk vs. standard Wool.
- Color: Dove Grey, Buff, or Ivory (classic morning suit colors) vs. the suit color.
- Shape: Double-breasted (Groom) vs. Single-breasted (Groomsmen).
Should I choose a Single or Double-Breasted vest?
Single-Breasted: The versatile standard, usually with 5-6 buttons. It creates a vertical line and suits all body types.
Double-Breasted: A more formal, "power" choice. It adds width to the torso, making it excellent for slim grooms. It typically features a straight hem and peak lapels, and it must always be kept fully buttoned to maintain its silhouette.
Is it okay to mismatch the Groomsmen's vests?
Yes, but it requires a unifying element. If you want a "mismatched" look, keep the fabric texture consistent (e.g., all tweed) while varying the colors (earth tones), or keep the color consistent (e.g., all grey) while varying the cuts. Total mismatching without a theme can look disorganized.
What is the best fabric for a summer or beach wedding?
Linen is the most breathable option due to its hollow fibers, but it wrinkles significantly. For a cleaner look that still breathes, we recommend a Wool-Silk-Linen blend. This "trinity" fabric offers the cool touch of linen, the luster of silk, and the wrinkle recovery of wool.
Is a silk vest appropriate for a standard suit?
Generally, high-shine silk or satin vests are reserved for Tuxedos or Morning Dress. Pairing a shiny vest with a matte business suit can look like a rental costume. For a lounge suit, choose "matte silk," "raw silk," or textured fabrics to add contrast without clashing.
Why must I leave the bottom button undone?
This tradition is attributed to King Edward VII, who unbuttoned his due to his girth, setting a trend. Practically, modern single-breasted vests are cut with a "cutaway" inverted "V" at the hem. Fastening the bottom button restricts fabric movement at the hips when sitting. Exception: Always button all buttons on a double-breasted vest.
Can I wear a belt with a vest?
No. A belt buckle creates an unsightly bulge under the vest and disrupts the clean vertical line. You should wear trousers with side adjusters or use suspenders (braces).
