While traditionally groomsmen paid for their own attire (or rental), it is becoming common for the groom to subsidize the cost, especially if requiring a specific, custom-made suit. A popular approach is for the groom to pay for the suit as his "gift" to the groomsmen, or to split the cost 50/50, viewing it as an investment piece they can wear to future events.
